Uncas and Magua's enmity

The Last of the Mohicans

Uncas and Magua's enmity turns the broader conflict between the Lenape and Hurons into a personal contest of opposing loyalties, political speech, and pursuit. Magua manipulates grief to place Uncas in danger; Uncas answers with open defiance and repeatedly abandons caution to confront his enemy. Their final encounter ends with Cora and Uncas dead, and Magua’s escape from the ledge leaves the conflict unresolved by either man’s survival.

Political Conflict and Public Speech

Magua’s hostility toward Uncas is sharpened by the young warrior’s captive defiance. When Uncas speaks in the Delawares’ language and condemns the Hurons, Magua understands him and seizes the occasion to redirect the insult into a public case for vengeance. He recounts the deaths of Huron warriors, appeals to the obligation to honor the dead, and urges the assembly to kill Uncas as a means of answering those losses. The speech turns personal antagonism into a proposed communal judgment.

Magua’s later political argument is more calculating. He praises Huron courage and wisdom, then urges restraint by emphasizing the tribe’s precarious relations with the French governor and the risks of provoking the Delawares. He presents prudence as a path toward eventual triumph, while leaving his specific intentions indistinct. The contrast between these speeches shows him adapting his appeal to his audience: grief can authorize vengeance, while strategic caution can advance his plans when direct force is disadvantageous.

Pursuit and Defiance

When the fighting breaks out at the Huron village, Uncas sees Magua among a retreating group and immediately turns from the wider battle to pursue him. He rushes forward with only a handful of warriors, and Magua, who had paused to receive him, retreats when Hawkeye and the other white companions arrive. Uncas presses the chase despite Hawkeye’s warning to respect cover, driving the Hurons toward their village, where the fighting resumes.

The enmity becomes explicit again when Magua flees with Cora. Uncas calls on him to stop, declaring that a Delaware girl calls him to halt. The pursuit continues over dangerous ground; Uncas takes the lead, and the fleeing Hurons begin to lose ground while burdened by their captive. His urgency makes the contest more than a military pursuit: Magua’s control of Cora draws Uncas into a direct confrontation in which stopping his enemy becomes his overriding aim.

Final Confrontation and Outcome

At a ledge above a precipice, Cora refuses to go farther. Magua turns toward her, but Uncas arrives after a perilous leap onto the ledge. In the confusion, one of Magua’s companions kills Cora. Magua attacks that companion, but Uncas, already gravely weakened, strikes Cora’s assailant down. Magua then turns on Uncas and kills him after the young warrior has lost the strength to defend himself.

Uncas keeps his gaze fixed on Magua until his death. Magua escapes with his remaining companion before Hawkeye reaches the ledge, leaving the final personal reckoning to Hawkeye’s later pursuit. The scene gives the enmity its tragic conclusion: Uncas succeeds in avenging Cora’s death, but cannot survive Magua’s attack, and Magua leaves the encounter alive.
